By using your Essence you can choose the difficulty of opponents faced.

Firstly you must understand that monsters on SCoD, in most areas, have 3 spawn levels. The mid-spawn level produces monsters of a level that the area was designed for. The low spawn level usually creates monsters either weaker or stronger than average. This allows such areas to be played over a wide range of levels. If you are in a party the average level is considered, including Racial Level Adjustment.

However, using your essence, you can artifically cause higher or lower level spawns to occur.

There are 4 settings:

  • Clueless - this ensures only the lowest level spawns appear. Of course, it also means less XP for kills since the monsters are probably too weak for your level.
  • Cutter - this is the default. Level appropriate spawns will appear, although if you are way too low or way too high for the area then its either going to be too difficult or easy regardless.
  • Planeswalker - Only high level spawns will appear. This may be too difficult for you if are not prepared for it.
  • Gatecrasher - This not only forces the top level spawns, but also increases the chance of Elite Monsters spawning. Elite monsters have extra abilities and strengths over their regular counterparts but are worth more XP. It can get quite hairy on Gatecrasher, although often it seems to be the most commonly used setting.
