You learn to leave your body behind and assume the form of a swarm of bat-like shadows. Physical weapons have no effect on you (pierce/slash/bludgeoning damage immunity, but elemental/negative/divine/magical damage on melee weapons will still hurt you), and though it is difficult for opponents to target you with single-target spells (rays, orbs, etc) a fireball will burn a swarm of shadows just as well as it will burn a human being. As a swarm, you have a limited attack and may lash out for 4d4 damage, but you are unable to cast spells.
