A branch of the Fraternity of Order.
Head: ??? (NPC)
Description: The proper application of the letter of the law is a skilful art - or so the Bobbers in the BoB say. They’re the sort of berks to turn down a well-founded appeal against a death sentence on the spot for having two spelling mistakes.
Role in the Cage[]
The berks of the BoB serve a couple purposes in Sigil's byzantine civil service. First, as the name might tell a cutter, they're a regulatory body handling a great deal of the sheer, unmitigated mass of bureaucracy that keeps the Cage's legal system ticking along. If there's a Triad rubber stamp involved, chances are it'll pass under the BoB's stringent attention, usually coming back triple the size and with numerous points of correction. Second, and a little less obviously, the legalist maestros of the BoB act as the Guvners' fixers in matters of legal conflict - who better to make sure a case goes just as the Fraternity wants it than the berks who've got every word of the whole sodding legal code rammed in their brain-boxes?
Judges of the Bureau of Bureaucracy are renowned for their ability to make firm rulings based in the very letter of the law, concluding difficult cases with sometimes-vindictive ease. Its consultants and advocates make for canny allies and cannier foes, weaving unassailable arguments of iron-clad legalese and undermining an opponent's claims with loopholes and critical technicalities.
Philosophy[]
Many outside the BoB claim that it's a stuck-up hive of over-strict rules lawyers, but that's rather missing the point. The Guvners of the BoB believe that the truest reading of Law goes down to the very letter of the law; therefore, say the Bobbers, any interpretation of Law can be held as authoritative truth if it stems from a direct reading of the Law. This makes them some of the more pragmatic law-jockeys of the Fraternity, often consulting in cases where a creative interpretation of the laws as written is required to produce the desired outcome.
'course, many of these Bobbers take this as an excuse to bob a berk with some old, half-baked law that never got taken off the books, but that's only half the story - while most of the BoB wield their expertise in legal literalism as a tool to leverage the world for their own ends, some of these use the letter of the law to uphold some sorry downtrodden sod's rights, or use their powers of bureaucratic obstruction to block things that'd do harm. Either way, though, you'd best not mess with the Fraternity's fixers, or you'll find the full power of Law looming to pummel a basher into submission.
